The Chevy Colorado vs the Chevy Silverado 1500: Which truck is better for you?

At Ciocca Chevrolet of West Chester, we see drivers from Coatesville to Philadelphia for a variety of different reasons every day. But perhaps the best reason to drop by our dealership is the impressive selection of new Chevy trucks we have in stock. And perhaps the two most popular among them are the new Chevy Colorado and the Chevy Silverado 1500. These two trucks are compelling options in their own right, but which one is the best fit for your lifestyle? Read on to explore our competitive comparison to see which new Chevy truck will best serve your needs.

Design

Take a look at both the new Chevy Colorado and Chevy Silverado 1500 and you'll notice some key similarities between the two. With naturally brawny body work and signature Chevy design elements like the iconic Chevrolet bowtie across the front grille, the Chevy Silverado 1500 and Chevy Colorado are some of the most eye-catching models in the pickup truck market.

That being said, the Chevy Colorado is a midsize pickup truck, while the new Chevy Silverado 1500 classes as a full-size truck, also known as a half-ton pickup. This means that the Chevy Silverado 1500 is considerably larger than the Chevy Colorado. Now, in the world of pickup trucks, bigger is often better, but depending on where you live and work, that may not always be the case. For example, if you're from Philadelphia and need a truck that can deftly navigate heavy traffic or snag streetside parking spaces, a smaller midsize truck like the new Chevy Colorado may just be the perfect fit for you.

While bigger pickup trucks are better if you're looking to take on tough hauling tasks. So, if you frequently find yourself picking up supplies like plywood sheets, masonry, or gravel fill from Home Depot over in King of Prussia, the capacious Durabed design of the new Chevy Silverado 1500 will be better for your needs.

Performance

Pop the hood of both the new Chevy Colorado and Chevy Silverado 1500 and you'll notice some key difference between the powertrain options they offer. At the entry level, the Chevy Colorado 1500 offers up to 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque from its 2.7-liter Turbo engine, which should prove plenty of brawn for day-to-day driving here in West Chester.

For added muscle, you can opt for the 2.7-liter Turbo Plus engine that boasts an output of up to 310 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque.

Spring for the 2.7-liter Turbo High Output engine and you'll hold the reins of 310 horsepower and a substantial 430 pound-feet of torque.

As for the new Chevy Silverado 1500, it's entry level engine matches the output of the Turbo High Output engine on the Chevy Colorado.

The Chevy Silverado 1500 can also be had with a 5.3-liter V8 engine or a 6.2-liter V8 engine, producing 355 horsepower or 420 horsepower respectively.

But perhaps the most impressive powertrain option for the new Chevy Silverado 1500 is its Duramax® turbo-diesel engine, which churns out a whopping 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque.

Capability

Both the new Chevy Silverado 1500 and Chevy Colorado are well-equipped for rough conditions and heavy hauling, but each excels in a different area.

For example, when it comes to off-roading near Lancaster, the new Chevy Colorado is arguably the better fit. With more off-road oriented trim options like the Chevy Colorado ZR2, Chevy Colorado Trail Boss, and Chevy Colorado Z71, not to mention a shorter wheelbase, the new Chevy Colorado excels in everything from slick mud to steep and rocky slopes.

Of course, that's not to say that the new Chevy Silverado 1500 is a slouch on rough terrain. It's plenty capable off the beaten path with its own Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 and Chevy Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss trims.

However, the new Chevy Silverado 1500 is best suited for shoppers who need a pickup truck that they can take to work in Coatesville or something that can haul a boat or camper trailer. With the ability to tow up to 13,300 pounds, the Chevy Silverado 1500 is great for everything from commercial applications to your next family vacation.

That being said, the new Chevy Colorado has plenty of towing power as well. With the ability to move up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped, this midsize pickup can handle smaller boats, utility trailers, toy haulers, or ATV trailers with ease, so it's great for West Chester shoppers who lead more active lifestyles.

Interior

For the Chevy Colorado there are two distinct cab styles. The Chevy Colorado boasts an available Extended Cab that seats up to six passengers but offers less rear seat legroom. You can opt for more rear seat leg room with the available Crew Cab on the Chevy Colorado.

By comparison, there are three distinct cab styles for the Chevy Silverado 1500. The standard Regular Cab can seat up to three passengers, but is best suited for solo drivers or pairs. The Extended Cab offers seating for up to six, and offers more rear seat leg room than the Extended Cab for the Chevy Colorado. The Crew Cab for the new Chevy Silverado 1500 is its most capacious, offering room for up to six and ample head and legroom to stretch out on longer drives.
